Learning chess from scratch around Lisbon usually starts in a class. The residents' association in Telheiras runs a chess school for children and adults alike, on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings, and the music conservatoire in Rio de Mouro teaches beginners from early school age. Nomad Chess Club gives private lessons for beginners in person and online, with prices on request.

The Ginásio Clube de Odivelas holds Saturday morning chess sessions for its members, and the German School's after-school group teaches the first grades in Portuguese. Once the moves feel familiar, the district association's introductory tournaments and the city's Joga Lisboa events give beginners a first tournament. Ask each teacher about level, group size and the language of the class.
