About this list
Clubs are where much of the organised chess around Lisbon happens. A few are societies devoted to the game, such as those in Avenidas Novas and Sintra; many more are chess sections of football, sports and neighbourhood clubs, from Sporting in Alvalade to Barreirense and Ferroviários in Barreiro and the Seixal clubs across the river.
Club nights usually fall on weekday evenings, often after classes for young players, and several clubs host tournament stages at weekends. Some open their doors to visitors, as in Arroios and Benfica; others keep play for members, and school chess clubs sit here too. Fees and guest rules vary from club to club, so a message before a first visit is the easiest way in.
